95% of our building is funded and more than 250 people already support us. Invest in our last investment round and support the construction of De Torteltuin!
We signed up on the platform Crowdbuilding and together with the aforementioned company and housing cooperative Stroom we are featured in an article by Amsterdam Alternative. Read the article in Amsterdam Alternative's July and August newspaper or online.

Would you also like to help realise de Torteltuin? Then buy bonds. This way you too will become an active participant in the housing cooperative movement!
Thanks to the support of Woonwaard, Max Giebels and Hans Hoogervorst, we were able to take the first step in our search for circular materials.

The wood from the doors in the photo is a potential source for our future facade. Recently, we have been disassembling the doors to figure out how best to reuse the wood. This turned out to be more challenging than initially thought....

Unfortunately, the world is not yet fully set up for recycling and reuse, which makes our work extra challenging. But we remain steadfast in our mission and continue our search for more circular materials!

Thank you Woonwaard, Max and Hans for your valuable contribution and thinking along!
Your enthusiasm for circularity and willingness to go the extra mile have made a huge difference!

Last week, Tortel Alex Peters was on NPO Radio 1 on the program Geld of Leven!

Key take-aways:

- The foundation of a housing cooperative is community and the commons. We are building not just a "residential building," but more importantly a "residential community.

-Living in a community has many (social) advantages, e.g.: providing care for each other (e.g. child care and elderly), sharing facilities (energy, goods, transport) and care for the living environment/neighborhood

-Money is a major bottleneck in developing a housing cooperative. Despite the social and financial benefits, obtaining financing is complicated.

Would you like to support The Torteltuin? You can do so by buying a bond! That's a small investment, with both financial and social returns !

If you would like to support the Torteltuin in another (financial) way, or if you have any questions about housing cooperatives, please do not hesitate to contact us! For financial support, there are plenty of opportunities for customized arrangements.

During the last couple of weeks the façade committee has been busy collecting recycled wood for the purpose of building a mockup of our façade.

We are currently looking for a storage space in Amsterdam or close by for storing the first batches of recycled wood we have been able to save.

Do you know of such a space which we can use for free or for a little fee? Let us know via info@detorteltuin.co

Jon Henley from The Guardian wrote an article about our project!

"It was 2020, we were 22 or 23 years old," said Iris Luden. "It was a dream. We were fantasising. What if we built our own place? We imagined a kindergarten, growing our own food … We got together every month to talk about it. But slowly, it happened."

Now we are nearly there! Help us fund the last 5% and invest in our bonds!

Read here about our tranche 2 bond campaign.

Together with Stroom, we were present at the We doen het Samen! Festival in Amersfoort. Tortel Lisa Veenstra talked about de Torteltuin and our bond campaign. Thank you for the possiblity to speak and organising this event Nederland Zorg Voor Elkaar (NLZVE)!

Since December, we have been affiliated with DuSpot.

Mart Mensink introduced us to this online marketplace for building materials, where sustainability, reuse and circularity of building materials is achieved.

We hope to score as many used building materials as possible through their network!

The building phase of de Torteltuin is in sight!

For the last bit of the funding we need some help. Do you want to make the housing market green and social?

'We design birdhouses for people and for animals'

Natrufied Architecture and our own construction group are currently working very hard on the final design for our building. That involves a lot of choices and questions, so the past two general assemblies have been all about brainstorming, discussing and sharing our living dreams. And how beautiful it is going to be, we can't wait to share the building with the plants, animals and human co-inhabitants.

A new Torteltuin article in the Trouw, about the importance of housing cooperatives in today's housing market and that of the future!

The position of young people in the housing market is not too good. That is why ASVA, !WOON, FNV Young & United and Pakhuis de Zwijger are organizing 'the Woontop'. The Woontop is an event about housing, for and by young people. At the Woontop the problems are mapped by experts, administrators are being challenged by the young people and speakers are heard who try to change the housing market in creative and idiosyncratic ways. With the help of talks, a market and workshops, we will dive into this subject together. We'll be there, too, of course. Benjamin will be present on behalf of the Torteltuin. Will you come too?

We reached our goal amount!
100%
€33.000
After two months of hard campaigning, we are proud to tell you that we have reached the crowdfunding target amount. Thanks to everyone who supported us!
On Thursday, November 18, 2021, we received a call from the City of Amsterdam. They told us that we had won the option for plot CE9-07 with 96 (out of 100) points scored! We hope that our fellow supporters of Stroom will also soon find a place to erect their dream building. The plot on Center Island has room for 40 residential units and is around the corner from our friends at De Warren.
Just because we have the option on a plot doesn't mean we can start building right away. Over the next few months we will carefully work out our plans and come up with sketches of the Torteltuin together with our architects from Natrufied. If the Municipality of Amsterdam approves these plans, we may sign an option agreement for the plot and a phase of building plans and final designs will begin. Only when that is all finalized as well can we sign the ground lease agreement.
Cheers to everything we've accomplished in the scant two years we've been on the road, cheers to all the mountains of work ahead!

Soon you will be able to support us financially!
In September, our crowdfunding campaign will go live! You can help make our dream come true, building the Torteltuin on Centrumeiland. A new piece of Amsterdam! Collectivity, a collaboration with nature and with each other, is the key. The Torteltuin will not only be a home for ourselves, but also for our ideals. Most current Tortels cannot afford to buy a house in Amsterdam. A housing cooperative with social and medium-rent gives us the possibility to create a place for ourselves and others that makes living in Amsterdam possible.
Interested? Keep an eye on this website and our socials!

Today (Feb 2, 2021) is our birthday! The Torteltuin exists for 1 year. As icing on the cake, as of today we are officially an association. It has been a fantastic first year. We have zoomed and met endlessly, but also dreamed, lounged, celebrated, balanced, eaten, cried and laughed. What a joy to build this together. Cheers to life again, and all that is to come!
SPUI25: Between commodification and 'common'-ification: living in the city

In collaboration with youth editors SPUI25 in Spe and housing cooperative the Torteltuin
Several years ago, the City of Amsterdam embarked on a policy path to support more housing cooperatives. Whereas this form of housing has materialized successfully in surrounding countries such as Germany, it seems to be a different story here. By no means everyone can obtain a plot on their own; do the "commons" belong to everyone?

Other inspiring projects
Many enthusiastic self-builders are in the process of realizing their own housing cooperative or have already realized a home. See below some inspiring projects.
De Nieuwe Meent
The New Meent is a housing cooperative rooted in the housing movement, with ambitions to become a commons for the city of the 21st century. They will build on Archimedesplantsoen in Watergraafsmeer.
De Warren
Housing cooperative de Warren wants to build for the city of the future. A social and affordable place, where people live together and care for each other. A small and open village, in the city.

They are currently building on Zeeburg, offering space here for a diverse group of people, from starters to families with children. There will be many common areas, and there is openness to the outside and the neighborhood.
Roggeveenstraat
On Roggeveenstraat, neighbors are building something beautiful. Of course, this beauty does not come out of the blue - it is preceded by an eventful neighborhood history, sprouting from a "for residents by residents" mentality.
De Groene Mient
Groene Mient is a residents' initiative in The Hague. They have realized an extraordinary socially ecological housing project.
De Kersentuin
De Kersentuin is an entire neighborhood in Utrecht-Leidsche Rijn and conceived, designed and decorated by the later residents. Construction was completed in 2003, but the Cherry Garden is still not finished. New residents join and they are always looking to improve or make something more sustainable.
