About the building
Our housing cooperative is built on the ideals that we want to live together socially, affordably and with a low impact on the environment.
We therefore try to incorporate these ideals as much as possible in the design of the building.

In De Torteltuin, we try to make space to meet, create spaces to share with each other and build a community together.
In doing so, we design with a lot of variety, to meet different housing needs.
For instance, the first, second and third floors are divided into groups of dwellings, called clusters, which share a living room.
On the ground floor, there is a very large cluster with an extra-large foyer, living room and industrial kitchen, for those who prefer to share with the whole building.

Throughout the building, several places also include spaces for everyone in the building to use, such as a coffee corner, a gym, a workshop, a home office, an event room, a rest room, a music studio and shared washing machine rooms. So you can meet your neighbours in lots of places throughout the building.
We are building for social and middle-rent. By making smart choices, we try to keep costs down. For instance, by sharing installations.
We also believe that the cheaper small dwellings will gain a lot of extra living quality and space through the large amount of shared space.

In various ways, de Torteltuin tries to reduce its impact on the environment and make a positive contribution. This is done at different levels: material, design and use.
We aim to use as many materials as possible with low environmental impact when building. For example, the main load-bearing structure is made of wood instead of concrete, the window frames are made of wood and the façade is built of recycled wood.
The design also takes into account reducing energy consumption and using space efficiently.

We also take into account in the design that things that can be shared are actually shared. Clusters are equipped with a laundry room so we need fewer washing machines and there is a workshop that allows us to share tools.
Finally, the building is not just designed for human use. We, De Torteltuin, also see a responsibility to contribute to biodiversity. Together with ecologists, we install nesting boxes and planting on and around the building. In this way, we create food, shelter and nesting opportunities for various animals and insects that occur locally.

Together with our architects, contractor and advisors, we are working hard to make it all a reality. By the end of 2024, we will be building!
